What is Shockwave?

Shockwave therapy is an effective non-invasive, non-surgical treatment for cellulite, ageing, anti-wrinkle and improved skin tone

Shockwave therapy works on cellulitis and other aesthetic body contouring by stimulating the fat breakdown, collagen synthesis (building blocks of new tissue), and lymphatic drainage.

One of our qualified and trained therapists will use a specialist machine and instrument on the surface of your skin to apply radial acoustic / shock waves through the skin.

What are the benefits of Shockwave / Lipotripsy?

  • Reduction of cellulite ‘dimples’

  • Fat reduction

  • Visible and long-lasting  improvements of skin tone and firmness

  • Restored natural elasticity of the skin and connective tissue.

  • Reduces stretch marks

  • Stimulation of collagen fibres

  • Improved healing process

  • Improved blood supply and lymphatic movement for removal of waste produces and fats

How shockwave works for cellulite treatment?

Shockwave  helps cells to flush away unwanted fat through the body’s natural processes.

Cellulite and body contouring works in multiple ways. For cellulite sound waves delivered by the machine stimulate microcirculation within fat layers. This creates an increase in metablic function and improves the cellular membrane permeability. This in turn allows fat to release fatty acids and glycerol to be more easily absorbed by the body. Shockwave also stimulates lymphatic movements and increases blood supply to the treated area which promotes faster removal of waste products from the body.

The shockwaves also improve skin tightening by stimulating connective tissues and regeneration, which gives the skin a firmer tone and reduces dimples in the skin, the often present signs of cellulite.

Is it proven to work?

Clinical research has concluded that it is a safe and effective treatment for body contouring and to reduce cellulite.

Some links to research and the summary of findings:

“Improvements in skin texture, clarity, and laxity were observed in digital photographs. Almost all patients reported improvement, with 79% reporting “good” or “excellent” improvement. Persistent side effects were not observed. Acoustic wave therapy could be used as a standard facial tightening treatment, with skin rejuvenation effects shown on digital photographs and three-dimensional quantification assessments. “

“Measurements with the 3D camera system clearly and objectively demonstrate a significant diminution in facial wrinkles and pores. Additionally, an improvement in skin texture was recognized. Conclusions: This study, although performed on a small number of patients, tends to show the safety and efficacy of radial AWT in treating facial wrinkles, skin texture, and pores and in a noninvasive way.”

What results can I expect from this treatment?

A trained aesthetic therapist will start by taking an in-depth consultation of your medical history, ensuring there is no reason why the treatment may not be suitable for you. In some instances (see below) shockwave therapy is not recommended, and in other cased it is not allowed.

A routine consent form ensures that you are happy with continuing with the treatment and that you understand the intended benefits and possible adverse effects of the treatment.

The application of the shockwave will begin and treatment times will varied depending on your body part and treatment plan, this usually takes between 5-20 minutes.

Are there any conditions that would stop me having shockwave treatment?

In some instances, shockwave therapy is not recommended, and in other cased it is not allowed.

Contraindications (complete restriction, no exceptions)

  • You are pregnant or trying to conceive

  • If you are taking anti-coagulants, such as warfarin

  • Known, or signs of, infection or tumours in the treatment area

  • Over your lung fields

  • Under the age of 18

  • If you have implants in the zone of treatment

  • If you have Botox or filler injections within the last 6 months

Precautions (consideration must be taken, to be discussed in depth)

  • Severe pain disorder

  • Haemophillia

  • Any form of injection in the past 12 weeks in the treatment area

  • Latex or coupling gel allergies

Does it hurt?

The treatment itself will be mildly to, at most, moderately uncomfortable. Your trained therapist will guide you through the treatment and adjust the intensity to ensure you are comfortable. This does not change the effectiveness.

All treatments are safe with no persisting side effects.

The treatment uses lower lever of shockwaves than other traditional treatments for pain and injuries, which are often known to cause moderate pain.

How long until I see results?

Results are normally seen within 2 weeks for both cellulite and anti-ageing facial treatments for the reduction of wrinkles.

The positive effects will then increase over the course of the next weeks and months onwards.

What else can I do to improve the effectiveness of treatment?

There are many other ways that can be useful in reducing fatty tissue in the body. Although these are not targeted and do not isolate specific areas of the body that you may be having ongoing problems with. These include:

  • Strength training (we recommend LDN PHYSIO)

  • Cardio-vascular exercise

  • Improve your sleep quality and duration

  • Engaging in nutritionist advice (LDN Wellness – Nutritionist page)

  • Quitting smoking: although smoking cessation has been shown to increase weight in the short term this is not as prominent as first thought, and the positive effects on metabolism, blood circulation and wrinkles when you give up are profound.

How many treatment sessions will I need?

We recommend a total of 10 sessions over the course of 5-10 weeks (1-2 sessions per week).

If you would like to discuss this in more detail then please discuss this with the LDN Wellness team
